A warning was released by the U.S. FDA on one of the most famous antidepressants being used today as studies have linked it to birth defects. Zoloft (sertraline) has been associated to a number of birth defects most especially if pregnant women take the medication during the third trimester of pregnancy. Zoloft even placed the warning in its website saying that pregnant women or those planning to get pregnant should check with their doctor prior to taking the antidepressant. A study published in New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 found out that there was an increased risk for the development of omphalocele in babies born to women who took Zoloft. Doctors are also being advised to exercise caution when prescribing the medication to pregnant women some patients are reluctant in talking about depression to doctors which is why some are not treated properly.

Pregnant Woman With Depression

When a woman becomes pregnant, a lot of changes happen to her. This is a time where she must be conscious of the things she eat, the medications she take and the activities she engage in. A lot of things should be considered because it will not only affect her health but more so her baby’s. There are plenty of factors to be considered because she is not only after her health but her baby’s as well. She and her family would want the pregnancy to be as healthy as possible. However, for those diagnosed with major depression before or during pregnancy, the pregnancy is put to risk. Depression can be harmful to the baby’s healthy especially with the treatments the mother has to have. Depression is primarily managed with antidepressants but studies have shown its association with birth defects. Other treatment modalities such as psychotherapy and hypnosis can be alternatives to these medications but other physicians would insist that it would be better if these treatments will serve as adjunct therapy to the medications. Stopping the drug abruptly for women taking it prior to being pregnant is also not advisable as withdrawal symtoms can occur.

Zoloft Use on Pregnant Women

Zoloft is antidepressant medication under the SSRI drug class. It was classified under Pregnancy Category C and is believed to be the safer medication among the other antidepressants found in the market today. However, with all the talks on Zoloft birth defects, doctors are now more cautious in prescribing the said medication.
