Hampers For Christmas

November 30th, 2009 by heart_health

The dictionary definition of the noun ‘hamper’ is a basket, usually with a cover, used for the packing and carrying of food.. It is primarily a British term. Hampers have traditionally been used for food because they are sturdy and offer open ventilation, traditionally being made from wicker. They are used frequently for picnics during the summer months. At this time of year however it is more common to see the Christmas hamper – a hamper filled with (often luxury) food and drink, given as a gift of indulgence. There are many companies offering Christmas Hampers. Coices of sizes and fillings vary but it is common to see a combination of alcohol and sweety and savoury gifts. The wicker basket is also useful around the home afterwards. Virginia Hayward is a company specialising in Hampers for the last 25 years. They offer modern hampers but also the very traditional.

Buying Manager Samantha Sandison says: “We’re always striving to find the best of local, national and international produce for inclusion in our hampers, as well as showing innovation in the products that we select”. Some of the more traditional items contained in their hampers are: Slim gold candles with holders, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mature Cheddar & Spring Onion Savoury Biscuits, Rich Christmas Pudding, Luxury Hand Made Mince Pies, Hand Made Cranberry Fudge, Luxury Natural Nut Mix, Milk & Dark Chocolate Selection, Classic Shortbread Biscuits, Strawberry Jam, Milk Chocolate Crumbles and Iced Fruit Cake. More modern inclusions are Black Jack sweets and Refreshers. “Our full Christmas range is available for sale on our website ( http://www.virginiahayward.com/product/christmas-hampers/) with the majority of items available for delivery until the 23rd December 2009,” says Samantha.

Not everyone goes for shop bought options, preferring to fill their own choice of basket with hand-selected items the recipient will particularly enjoy. Not everyone can spend Christmas with loved ones, making hampers a great gift to give to them as you have the option of inserting notes, pictures and other personal touches to remind them that they are missed and loved.

If you choose to give either a shop bought or handmade hamper, you are continuing a tradition that looks set to stay for many more years.
